Do you need planning permission for air conditioning?
Usually not. In England and Wales the one-metre boundary rule is gone and a stricter 37 dB calculation replaced it — but it is still 42 dB in Scotland, and the boundary rule still binds in Northern Ireland.

Dated, sourced, and corrected when they’re wrong
Every guide carries the date it was last checked, the primary sources it was written from, and a plain note anywhere we haven't had it independently verified.
Six of the nine guides here exist to correct something that’s widely published and wrong. The one-metre boundary rule hasn’t applied since May 2025 and is still quoted everywhere. The noise standard changed in May 2026, got materially stricter, and became the only route to installing without planning permission — which is also why the standard advice to buy one size up is no longer safe, a connection we have yet to see made anywhere else.
Those pages were accurate when they were published and were never revisited, which is nobody’s fault exactly — but between them they send a homeowner into a survey with two wrong beliefs. If we’ve got something wrong we’d rather hear about it than rank for it.
